Objective

Currently, the 8 km access road to the site is under construction and the projected cargo will feed the port via rail connections to and from the offshore ports at Kisumu and Mwanza to the Indian Ocean ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. Hinterland freight opportunities also exist through to the Eastern Democratic Republic of The Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Description

The first phase will involve construction of the port, administration jetty, free trade zone, shunting yard, a two-berth multipurpose terminal and a two berth Roro terminal. The second phase, expected to be complete by 2030, will extend the multipurpose terminal by additional two berths to a total quay length of 540 metres (1,772 ft).
