Objective
The Alexandria Port expansion is the direct northern counterpart to the Ain Sokhna project. Together, they form the anchors of Egypt's Sokhna–Alexandria Logistics Corridor, effectively creating a bi-oceanic "land bridge" that links Red Sea shipping with the Mediterranean via high-speed freight rail and newly modernized expressways
Description
The Greater Alexandria Port expansion is a multi-billion-dollar modernization project that unifies the historic ports of Alexandria and El Dekheila with a new middle port, El Max, into a single integrated mega-hub. As the northern anchor of Egypt's strategic Sokhna–Alexandria Logistics Corridor, this expansion acts as a Mediterranean maritime gateway connected to the Red Sea via a high-speed freight rail "land bridge." The massive civil engineering effort involves constructing five new breakwaters stretching 7,000 metres and carving deep-water berths up to 18 metres, allowing the unified port complex to seamlessly accommodate ultra-large container vessels. To drive the port's operations, the Egyptian government has secured long-term concession agreements with premier international maritime operators. The crown jewel of the expansion, the Tahya Misr 2 Terminal at Berth 100, is developed and managed by a powerful alliance of Hutchison Ports and MSC, injecting an additional 1.5 million TEUs of annual capacity into the hub. Supplemented by a 1.1 square-kilometre integrated logistics park established by the UAE's AD Ports Group, the modernized Greater Alexandria Port now handles over 82 million tonnes of cargo annually, controlling roughly 60% of Egypt's total foreign trade.
