Description

The reconstruction of the Astana-Karagandy road was part of Kazakhstan's "Nurly Zhol" infrastructure development program, which was announced in November 2014. The capital city of Astana was renamed as Nur-Sultan in 2019. Karagandy is sometimes referred to as Karaganda. The road was built in the era of Soviet Union, and was rehabilitated with external fund from ADB, World Bank and the Islamic Development Bank before 2003.

History

The Astana-Almaty road has been considered one of the most important road infrastructure projects in the country and a key investment project in CAREC Corridor 1. In the 2008 CAREC Transport and Trade Facilitation document by ADB, the project is listed as an ongoing investment project (2009-2012) with a cost estimation of USD 1 billion. In the 2013 Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy document, it is listed as a $904million project to be implemented 2013-2015. It is not included as an investment porject in the later documents by CAREC. No specific document can be found as in documenting the finance and implementation details of the project. However it is considered as an integral part (and initial phase) of the $9bn "Nurly Zhol" (Bright Path) state infrastructure development program which was initiated in 2014.
